English Department

As part of the English Department’s commitment to achieving the mission of the University of Hail, it works to provide high quality education to its students, and provides them with the appropriate knowledge and skills that qualify them as competent graduates capable of optimally serving their country. This is accomplished by enhancing their understanding of theoretical and practical topics and problems related to cultural, social, and linguistic aspects. That touch people's lives, as well as by training students to track sources of knowledge independently, and developing their abilities to think critically and creatively so that they become distinguished professionals in the future. The department offers educational courses leading to a bachelor's degree. These courses cover many subjects and topics in language, linguistics, literature, language pedagogy, and translation. Subjects include language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and also include world literature, especially English and American, and teaching the English language, as well as several aspects of applied and theoretical linguistics. In addition to the main track (Language and Literature Studies) and the secondary track (Pedagogical Education), the department offers compulsory educational courses in language skills for other academic majors at the university. Studying the English language gives students linguistic skills and knowledge in linguistic and literary studies, helps them develop their ability to understand and analyze problems, and develop independent thinking. This would instil in students a love of knowledge, critical thinking, and professionalism. These goals are accompanied by another goal, which is to help students develop their awareness and appreciation of human and moral values and cultural diversity, which are values that should enhance graduates’ desire for leadership, professionalism, and responsibility. Such qualities make the English language major a distinct specialty for working in diverse fields and different contexts such as work in education and other government institutions, business and the media, as well as in language teaching and translation.

GREETINGS from the Head of the Department of English at University of Ha'il (UOH), College of Arts! English today is a lingua franca for the whole world. So, the Department has taken up the task to contribute in building our nation and actualization of the 2030 vision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Department of English is one of the leading academic departments of UOH, which works to produce professionally as well as globally competent undergraduates in the field of English language and literature to meet the requirement of the job market and boost research in related fields, including high ranking positions that require good commands of English.

Our department ensures that all its members—faculty and students—engage in high quality learning and scholarly works. Faculty research interests are diverse and our student activities are acclaimed campus-wide. The Department includes qualified, experienced, and dedicated linguists, applied linguists, literary specialists, and experts in English language skills. The program of English is unique in that it brings together different, but related, areas of study: Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, English Literature, and Language skills. Fresh students are offered skill-based courses that directly help them upgrading their ability in English usage.
